PIR sensors and floodlights are installed to increase the security of a property. For these installations to be effective, they must be reliable. Here at Quality Electrician, I regularly carry out the installation of PIR sensors and floodlights at homes in the Birkenshaw area. I’m here to explain what makes an effective PIR sensor and floodlight installation and how to ensure the products used are reliable.
What is a PIR Sensor?
PIR sensor is short for Passive Infra-Red sensor. It detects movement through the measurement of infrared radiation that is either emitted or refracted by objects that fall within it field of view. When someone passes through its field of view, it detects the change in infrared radiation and activates. An activated PIR can then turn on a linked security device such as a floodlight. PIR sensors are available in a combined unit with a floodlight or as a separate device.
Benefits of separate PIR sensor and Floodlight
As I mentioned above, PIR sensors and floodlights are available as one combined unit. However, experience has taught me that these combined units are often unreliable and fail quite quickly – 15% fail completely within the first two years. To give my customers the best, most reliable security system, I only install separate PIR sensors and floodlights.
There are many benefits to installing separate PIR sensors and floodlights beyond their reliability. Separate PIR sensors offer better, more customisable options with less nuisance operation – a common complaint with combined units. They allow you to mount each component where it works most effectively with no need to compromise the performance of one for the other. An example of this would be where the field of view the PIR sensor requires to activate means the floodlight must be placed in a position where it could shine light into a neighbouring home. With separate units the floodlight can be placed at a better height so as not to cause a nuisance, whilst the sensor (which has no effect on the neighbours) can be placed where it is needed.
With a separate PIR sensor, you also have the option to link multiple lights to a single sensor. This is particularly useful for Birkenshaw homes where the garage or driveway is detached from the home. You can install lights on the garage, pathway, and by the front door that are all triggered when movement is detected at the garage. This will light your way safely when you return home late at night – and will also deter any potential intruder.
PIR Sensor and Floodlight Installation
An effective PIR sensor and floodlight installation should be carried out by a qualified, experienced electrician. Installing electrical equipment outside requires technical skill and a thorough understanding of regulations, it is not something that should be attempted by an amateur. An electrician who is also experienced in installing security lighting will have a good understanding of where to place both floodlights and PIR sensors. They will install the floodlights where they will best deter intruders but will keep them from annoying your neighbours!
